Bought 3 pieces of Nathan furniture about 25 years ago for a four figure sum . Took me 4 years of interest free credit to pay it off .
A couple of years ago much to my disgust my wife gave 2 pieces away to charity .
Today on antigues roadtrip they auctioned my other piece off .
It made one pound . The lowest bid ever on the show .

That's the way with furniture I'm afraid. A good quality ding chair will cost a few hundred new, second hand it's more or less worthless.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

Although Mid century bucks that trend, very popular with the younger ones up here.Play with the expectation of winning not the fear of failure. S.Clarke0

Sad, but true that the cheapest place for firewood is brown furniture auctions. I've seen tables with 8 chairs which would have cost thousands when new go for £10.0

The four figure sum was to get use of the furniture for 25 years. The £1 is your profit.0

I have often wondered if members or the public who appear on some of these type of shows get a fee or indeed repeat performance fee for being on them.
On some of the buying and selling house programs I have seen the same estate agents appear multiple times, some of them quite colourful and would deserve a fee for what they bring to the show.Play with the expectation of winning not the fear of failure. S.Clarke0 -
Looking at sold prices at auction you could possibly furnish a house with genuine antiques for a couple of thousand pounds but unless you are purposely going for the timeless country house look it is out of fashion.
To be fair Nathan was probably on its way out when you bought it having been on a par with g plan in its day!0 -
Same story here - my parents had a Nathan sideboard and a huge solid oak dresser. Both units were immaculate. Chairty shops wouldn't even take them because they were "too dark and wouldn't sell". It's weird that a solid oak unit with dovetail joints, proper brass fittings etc is worthless, whereas people would pay a few hundred for something made of chipboard and MDF, thrown together with a nail gun, just because it's a modern grey colour. But that's fasion folks1

We sent some items to auction when my father in law died a few years back. The best price was for the big battered old farmhouse kitchen table (it was well used and abused!). It outsold some of the nice antique stuff.0

You should have bought Ercol! I'm sat at my late parent's table with a "love seat" bench and chairs purchased in the 1960s. I bought 2 extension tables a decade ago and the whole lot is still worth over £1k. Totally miffed that they gave away a buffet sideboard and bureau when they "upgraded" to G Plan."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.1
