Smart meter not displaying

I've had a smart meter with Octopus for over three years. Not long after it was installed the IHD stopped displaying and no usage was being recorded when I log into their website (gas only, electicity meter seems fine). The display on the meter is completeley blank. If I press the buttons on the meter the backlight comes on but there are no digits. So I cannot submit a manual meter reading. Octopus have been billing me using what I assume are estimates. I've raised this with them a number of times and nothing happens. I've lodged a complaint with the Energy Ombudsman. If, as I suspect, the meter is completely buggered and has not been recording gas usage can they still bill me? I've been on various tarrifs with them over the time so what rates will they use?

    The bills will show if they have been using estimated meter readings, take a close look and see if that really is the case?
    It will be under 'Your charges in detail' in the gas section. Next to the meter readings it will say what type of reading has been used...

    With hindsight, you should have started the complaint process shortly after your first report of a blank meter went unheeded - maybe 2 years ago. What's done is done though.

    They'll bill you on estimated readings, using the tariffs that were applicable to the time of the estimated use.
