Dealers have real time online systems and once you give them the V5C can instantly put the car back into their trade ownership without needing any further paperwork as far as I know.

I think you are being somewhat over dramatic about all of this, they have agreed a refund and are proceeding as normal.

AA will be responsible for the cosmetic condition when they lifted it. If its damaged after the AA delivered it but before the dealership pay up, its between the AA and the dealer to argue it out. If its been damaged before it broke down. that's another matter (you used it for 30 mins?) Personally I'd not worry about that aspect.

Also forget about any "returns process" or "processing" the return - the law says they have 14 days to refund you, after they have been notified formally that you wish to reject it.

Once the V5 arrives, I'd do the "sold to trade" notification yourself (you know the details of the dealer, right? Including email address?) then this will start the tax refund process (you will lose a month's tax - but that's the way it works) and cancel the insurance. On this point, I'd definitely cancel it, or make the insurer aware you no longer own or have any interest in the car, rather than leave it until you have another car. If it were fixed then used and a crash happened, you would be on the MID as the insurer.
Thanks Paul, very helpful. Yes have dealership details and that's what I thought I need to with the V5. However, the car dealership is adamant I must hand over my complete V5 to them and that they will do the online notification before they can initiate the refund. Is there anything I need to be concerned about, ie if I do the notification, will they use this to delay refund by saying, such as well now they must wait for them to receive their new V5 (another week of wait at least)?
They won't receive a new V5. Only registered keepers do. The car will go "into trade", between keepers.

Look at it from the other side. If they did a refund before having paperwork there would be no incentive for the customer to comply with the request for the V5C to be returned so the dealer could have a car they can't sell because they have no V5C.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
