Price on Amazon has dropped from £105 to £69, so it would be an extra £20 now. I think I'll see if it drops again as I can exchange until 31st Jan, so it might get back down to £49 again!

No, Amazon don't have to do anything - they're allowed to just refund I'm afraid.
You didn't buy the toaster from Rangemaster, so you have no consumer rights against them.

It's a pain, but unfortunately there's not much you can do in these circumstances.
I figure refund from Amazon is my only redress but...
Rangemaster manufactured a faulty toaster and didn't pick up the fault during any testing process - assuming they have one. They boxed it up and sold it to Amazon, for Amazon to sell on. Amazon had no idea they had been sent a faulty toaster and neither did I. Surely Rangemaster should take some responsibility? Regardless of whether they have any legal responsibility, as a premium brand, I did expect them to do something e.g. offer a replacement or a repair. And, as mentioned, they provide the warranty for years 2 & 3, so would have to fix or replace at that point?
I agree completely with your logic, but that's not how the law is set out - the legislation around this clearly makes the retailer responsible.
The warranty in years 2 and 3 is in addition to your rights against the retailer, and is bound by the terms of the warranty which should be detailed in the documentation included with the device.

Having looked closely at the problem, it was being caused by some of the heating wires being flat against the insulation material. I've managed to gently tease the dull ones out slightly and they now glow orange like they should. Still not as bright on the inside as the outside but toasting much closer on both sides than it was.

So definitely a fault in manufacturing and not tested properly (at all?) afterwards.
