  • I am interested if anyone can answer this question also as I tend to use my BM these days rather than the hand method, thanks

    what is the oldbread rule?
    not sure i follow
can i go to the bread counter in asda and ask for free yeast?

The breadmakers "code" (superstition) is that if someone asks you for yeast, and you have some, give it to them. If you don't, then your next bread will fail to rise! However, Tescos, ASDA, etc, give it to customers as I guess they will sell more flour, etc, and they (strictly speaking) cannot sell it as it is a live culture. Sainsbury's, however, will sonly sell it to you - mmmm perhaps we should invoke the old superstition on their bread!! :rotfl:

  • I got a load of yeast from Tesco's about 2 weeks ago - far too much to use really! And although i kept it in the fridge in jar, the last couple of doughs haven't risen very well, even though the yeast smelled yeasty and bubbled away quite happily.
    So i reckon there's a definite shelf-life with!

Also, i don't think it's because it's live that they have to give it away - or next time i'm in i'll ask for some Stilton and a bio-yoghurt too!

I work in an Asda Bakery. We give the yeast away for free because the company doesn't pay for it. As a rule we are only suppost to give a customer 2oz but the majority of time we just cut a chunk off. :p

  • Hi there,

I love to make my own bread! I do have one problem when making my own bread and that is I do not have anywhere warm enough to let the dough rise. My home town is so hot we can let the dough rise anywhere. I do not have a bread maker and do not intend to get one. Can anybody tell me how I could solve this problem? Thanks...

How hot does it get on top of your tv.. or something like that which will be warm.. or put it in the oven at a very very low tempurature (or a cooling down oven to allow it to rise in warmish conditions.)

I would strongly advice AGAINST using fresh yeast in a bread maker - I did once and the fire alarm was set off, and then the bread maker could not be used again afterwards...

If the dough rises above the edge of the pot inside the bread maker, then it can fall down onto the heating mechanism and start a fire.

But of course it all depends on how much yeast you put in it!
