Would a quick trip to the Registry Office solve the problem ?
You can have a traditional wedding thereafter when it suits you, if that's on the agenda.

There is of course no reason why she can't get (and retain) a passport in her current name. The only issues would be when it's being cross-referenced with something else. She could have a driving licence in a different name if she wanted alternative ID for non-travel purposes.

I'm pretty sure that when we went on honeymoon (decades ago) Mrs QrizB travelled as Miss BrizQ under her family name and she only changed records after we got back home.
If you're travelling to one of the benighted parts of the world (like Plymouth) where they don't allow unmarried folk to share a room, see if you can take your marriage certificate as proof that you're not sinning.

This. We got married abroad, missus travelled in maiden name, didnt update passport for another 4 months.

As long as the airline and passport names marry (no pun intended) up, nobody cares.
I would leave it in her maiden name.

As @Grumpy_chap says - she won’t be able to have a passport in her married name untill after the wedding and 4 weeks may be a bit tight (or cause unecessary stress and worry)
We really don't see the point in paying for the passport in her maiden name and then paying again a few months later to replace it in her married name.
Neither do I, which was why I was suggesting she just keeps it in her maiden name.
I understand what you mean but I know she would prefer that all future holidays were booked in her married name. And if anything, it would be pain to try and remember that the name on her passport was her maiden name every time we went to book a holiday or flights so that all tickets had the same name. But thanks again.

That would be a whole new ballgame - but at least hers alone!

    1) Enough time has been spent in this relationship that neither of us will be doing that.
    2) Personal preferences doesn't really make this an option but may suit others in a similar situation.

    Thanks to you both.

Roughly 4 months till wedding, and four weeks from wedding to honeymoon.
Have you checked the timelines for a passport application to be processed (including consideration that the timeline may change between now March)?
Will you need to consider the accelerated passport service if the application in her married name can only be made after the Wedding?

It might be worth checking the full rules on passports when getting married.
IIRC, when we got married, we travelled for Honeymoon on our separate passports (maiden name) as my wife could not apply for a passport in her married name until the Wedding.
However, again IIRC, my Brother's wife had a passport in advance but it was sent to the Vicar for safekeeping to hand over only once the Wedding was properly completed and register signed.
Yes timeline for applications at the moment is around three weeks.

With the apply in advance method I mentioned above, our minister will complete his part of the forms well before the wedding so that we should have a forward dated passport for my fiancée in advance of both our wedding and honeymoon.

I'm thinking this must be a recent change as I'd never heard anyone mention it before as an option. I did see a Facebook group discussing this method recently so I'll see if I can find the screenshot of their discussion on how this would work incase it's of interest to anyone else.
Iam in my 70's and the advance application was normal in my youth, so not a new system.

For the cost of a change of name with the airline, spread over the 10 years of a passport I'd just do it. You've enough to worry about.

Interesting to know as many of the people I had seen discussing it had never heard of this as an option before. Unless it's just a modern thing as there are about 40% less marriages than 50 years ago and the people who don't know never got married
  • Hopefully you read my previus message about applying for a first passport and the restrictions associated with it (ie you can not use a PD2 post dated approach and I don't believe you can do the fast track either)...

I did this in the 80s. Applied a few weeks in advance with some marriage details, I can’t remember who had to sign that we were getting married, the passport came back with an amendment of name written in hand on the passport and date stamped as valid from the date of the wedding. The passport came straight back to me.

Looks like they have changed the rules since the 80s! I had my original passport name changed, now they issue a new passport in advance of the wedding. You can do this up to 3 months in advance. Details here: https://www.gov.uk/changing-passport-information/name-marriage-and-civil-partnership

careful with the visa situation, if required, some countries may not be prepared to issue a visa on a passport that isn’t yet valid.

Hi. Yes I have. I need to check with her that is it her first passport and not her first adult passport as she may have had one as a child.

EDIT: After a quick check she has had a passport before so will just be a renewal and hopefully the PD2 form can be used.
