Confused how to change my old router to a new one

Hi all

My small office currently uses a Router (Model Draytek Vigor 2860n).  Recently, after getting a couple of new iPhones in the office, we have been receiving messages on our phones saying
Weak Security.  The actual message says
WPA/WPA2 (TKIP) is not considered secure.
If this is your Wi-Fi network, configure the router to use WPA2 (AES) or WPA3 security type.

Can anybody recommend a good performing replacement router that I can just plug in to replace this Draytek, which will obviously just take over?

Thanks for any recommendations.

The answer to that will depend on things like:   budget, size of the office (both physical size and number of people), what you want to use it for (e.g. standard "work" stuff, streaming movies).

That was a decent router in its day, but its day was more than a decade ago. Probably time for an upgrade.

Draytek still make decent routers. Something from the 2865 or 2866 range would be an equivalent replacement.
Whatever replacement you choose will need configuring, which isn't always straightforward.
Who supplied and installed the current Draytek? Are they available to arrange its replacement?

  • The device was already installed when we took over the office lease some years ago.

We have a tech guy who serves a lot of companies in the building. I will ask him.

    Thank you.

AFAIK that model of router can have the WiFi set to WPA2-PSK (AES) only (sometimes called “WPA2 only, AES only”) which will stop the iOS messages about weak security.

However it's out of support for security patches and doesn't support features like WiFi 6, so an upgrade to something like a Vigor 2865 makes sense.

Swapping a business-grade router isn't as simple as plugging in, you'll likely want the 'tech guy' to assist

    Thanks for the advice mate.
  • Hi Guys

Thanks for the advice here.  Indeed, the original Draytek I purchased was incorrect.  I have now bought the replacement item.  If you all don't mind I will start another thread on how to set the item up, because our freelance tech guy has asked me some questions which I can't answer.

Business-quality routers have a startlingly-large number of settings.
Unless you're pretty well up in networking, I would suggest you get someone who is.
It can be somewhat of a black art (if saying such a thing is still allowable) to set one up, and if you don't know what you're doing you could come unstuck and not get it to work.
Sorry, but that's why network techies get paid £gasp!

    Hey John

You are not Joking!  OMG, its even worse that the router controlled our phone system.  My head is mashed with the sheer number of ports, port numbers, numbers and 3 letter acronyms.  I am so glad I got the tech guys to sort it.

    Thank you
