Bedding - what depth fitted sheets?

Can anybody explain for me what depth fitted sheet we need for a particular depth of mattress?

Our mattress is 23 cm deep and the most popular fitted sheet depths at Dunelm, for example, are 25cm, 28cm and 32 cm.

So what depth do we need?

I presume the sheet needs to be deeper than the mattress to fit properly, but I also presume that if it's too big then the fitted sheet is going to be too "loose" and will ruck up.

I've tried looking for guidance online but that all seems to be expressed in terms of standard, deep and extra deep, but I haven't a clue if a 23cm mattress is standard, deep or what it is.

Anybody point me in the right direction?

I think that it doesn't really matter as all will have the same width/length to fit the area you lie on, the remainder will tuck underneath. However deeper sheets cost more to cover cost of fabric.

I would get the closest size above the depth of the mattress.  For a 23 cm mattress, 25cm sheet.  We have had some quite a bit deeper than the mattress and they tend to ruck up overnight.

If you wash on a hot wash, sheets have a tendency to shrink slightly. I’ve been struggling with a 23cm mattress and sheets that are standard depth. I’ve just upgraded to deep sheets and they fit on easily and seem to remain in place. The excess just means there is more sheet under the mattress.

If you hot wash fitted sheets, the elastic won't last long.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

I would go deeper than your mattress by one or two steps. We have a 38cm mattress, and bought a 40cm deep sheet, only to find that it rides up along the sides. So it fits perfectly at the corners, but the mattress is on show at the sides.
We recently bought a 46cm deep sheet and it is perfect all over

I'd certainly go for a fair bit deeper than the mattress. We only wash ours at 30C and they shrink. They weren't cheap either. Dorma and John Lewis.
