Over the years, I have bought a number of phones from that well-known auction site, so now I fancy an iPhone, I turned to them again. There are dozens of 16 Pros for sale, many of them being "opened, not used". Most sellers have little or no seller history, so I wondered what was going on. Does anyone have any recent experience?

What's going on?  Who knows, they maybe genuine or a scam.

New seller or a seller that was inactive for a long time then listing phones is always one to be wary
of if not just avoid completely.

I've bought iPhones before on eBay but only from sellers with lots of feedback who offer returns. 

I would be very wary of buying from a low or no feedback seller.

opened - unused could mean that they bought a phone with a contract but don't need the phone.  Don't buy from anyone who doesn't have a good number of feedback scores though.  It's a well known scam mostly.  People create new accounts, sell dodgy stuff and take your money, then de-activate their card so if you complain it's very difficult to force a refund on the dodgy seller
