Thank you all, several useful ideas there to look into.

The sim thing took so long because I am not currently in the UK!
So first i got a replacement sim forwarded from my UK address, then realised I could not activate it if not in UK.
Then signed up for an e-sim, and waited several days for them to port the number before giving up.
I have now signed up to a VOIP service that gives me a UK number I can receive texts on, and waiting for my number to be ported - does not work on weekends, apparently.
Unfortunately the VOIP service is not a complete soluton, as to log in to it, I need to get a code to my sim - so if I lose that, I am screwed once again.

I've applied for an Amex card so i can get codes by e-mail if I lose my phone.

I bank with RBS and Nationwide, and have credit cards with RBS, Halifax, mbna and Barclays.
NONE of these offer any alternatives at all.
Even though I still have card readers for the RBS and Nationwide, I cannot use them to log in, only to confirm transactions once logged in already.
    ...
Nationwide online banking log in can still be verified with the card reader.  It is the only method I use.  Ditto Barclays.

AFAIK they don't disable it if you ever use a different method, but worth speaking to Nationwide in case it has been.

They certainly don't, at least SMS / Card reader. I can and use both (although I don't have their app and have never used this third option)
