Econ 7 smart meter not sending gas reading

Another day, another meter hassle! How do smart meters work for 2 tariff electricity and gas? Or don’t they? The smart meter is recording - and sending - day and night readings for electricity but isn’t sending anything for gas. Is this normal? Smart meter was installed in September. OVO has requested a reading.

    Broadly:
    • The electricity meter sends its data to the comms hub over the Zigbee HAN.
    • The gas meter sends its data to the comms hub over the Zigbee HAN.
    • The comms hub collects all the data and sends it to the DCC via the WAN.
Has your gas meter ever sent a smart rading to your supplier? If it hasn't, it's possible that it's not connecting to the comms hub, and the usual reason for that is that it's too far away or the signal is blocked.
Can you read the gas meter manually (you'll need to press a button to wake up the screen)? Does the screen have a signal strength indication on it?

The comms hub usually sits in a box on top of the electricity meter, and looks like it's part of the meter. (it sits there because it needs electricity to work). And that's why gas meters sometimes have trouble sending data, because they're not right next to the hub. Also the installer sometimes doesn't set them up right and they never are able to send data until that is fixed. Tell Ovo in writing that they need to get somebody to fix things so the gas meter is able to send readings. And in the meantime take a manual reading and send it to them as they ask.

Thanks both. I have sent a reading. The gas meter is an old one with dials. I just assumed the smart meter would do both gas and electricity- I hadn’t realised the gas meter was entirely separate!

All previous replies on the assumption that lilac_dawn has a smart gas meter, seemingly not.
lilac_dawn you will need to contact your gas supplier and request a smart meter, if you so wish to do.
