Open Office http://www.openoffice.org/ free, supports microsoft format documents & works on almost any platform.Winnings

Try openoffice.org.
Edit: I knew someone would beat me to it!!! In that case, try Abiword (http://www.abisource.com/) just so you can be a bit different!0 -
If you just want a wordprocessor rather than full office application set you can try abiword - its free from http://www.abisource.com/
I like openoffice and would recommend that though - just because you might want to use the other programs such as the spreadsheet or presentation software.
Edit: Also beaten to it!0 -
And just to be different again, you could try google docs an online office suite so you don't need to download and install it. You do need to register though. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends

And just to be different (again) again you could also try https://www.zoho.com. This is a bit like google docs, but a bit better in my opinion as it has a more familiar interface and so more user friendly. If you really want to be super savvy, you can also install google-gears and use it with Zoho so that you can use it whilst you're not connected to the internet in your web browser.
With both zoho and google docs, you can store the docs on their servers for access on any PC. You can also save them to your PC if you wish as a backup. All options mentioned should be sufficient for your needs since you only want to write a letter/CV.
My vote would go for abiword if you're not too familiar with web apps as it's lean and faster than open office. Saying that, I have both on my mac/pc/linux box.0 -
Don't forget the spell checker too.
They're very handy.0
