Contacts on BT 8500 if landline is disconnected.

If I give up my landline when my broadband contract is renewed in January am I right in thinking I will lose numbers stored in my BT8500 contacts list?  I would have time to write them down individually but there are so many and I would need to start now.

I would also need to let my contacts know, individually if they do not use a mobile 'phone, that I no longer have a landline..  I would like to keep my landline but it might not be possible without costing quite a bit more than what is included in my present broadband, telephone and calls package.

So, if my BT8500 contacts are lost I would start preparing now, thank you.

The contacts are stored on the phone, so no, they won't be lost.

I thought for that phone the contacts were stored on the BT Hub?

Maybe the OP could confirm they have a BT Smart Hub router? If so, contacts can be downloaded to a .vcf file.

  • I don't have a BT Hub.  If I stay with Plusnet I will keep their Router but, if not, I will have to return it.  My BT8500 landline 'phone is quite old and I don't think it has a slot for a sim card.

Thank you very much for replying.

Is it a Plusnet 2 router? They are a rebadged BT Hub but with different firmware. No need for SIM card, you can connect with a browser.

See if you can log onto the thing, never seen the interface but hopefully you will be able to see the phone and options for it.

The BT 8500 is just an old school DECT phone as far as I know, it just plugs into the line. Its quite an old phone, pre-dates digital voice

    Think you're right.

Did another lookup of the Plusnet router, looks unlikely that there's any numbers stored, would have needed the active phone socket that's on the BT version, not activated here.

Thanks flanners_lobster.  It is a Plusnet Hub Two and I had help to set it up.  (As far as I can see there is no slot for a sim card).  As long as I am with Plusnet I'll have my landline with my contacts list.  I don't think it is  a BT Smart Hub Router.  I'm sorry I don't know what a .vcf file is or how to connect to a broswer from the Router.

It sounds as if I'll have to start the slow way and copy the numbers and let people know if I no longer have a landline.

Thank you all very much for replying.

I now have no landline and, thank you for the help, I have transferred my contacts to my Moto G54.

I mislaid my mobile at home but found it after a struggle - it had slipped down the inside of my sofa..

I'm  now thinking I need an inexpensive PAYG quite basic mobile as emergency backup - wondering about Doro and 1P Mobile PAYG.

I thought I posted on MSE Mobile Forum  and there was helpful information - but I apologize as I cannot find it now.  Although I am pleased to have a renewed broadband only contract  staying with Plusnet, I would feel more reassured if I had a back-up mobile phone - just in case of emergencies,or if I lose or misplace my current "main" mobile phone.

If I should post this on another Forum as a new post, please let me know.  Thank you.

Just be aware that 1p Mobile imposes a charge of £10 every 60 days regardless of usage so, for you, I wouldn't recommend it.

Take a look at either giffgaff or Asda mobile. They charge 25p and 15p per minute for calls but given that you may never use it for a call that's not an issue. You must however make one chargeable call or send at least one text message every 180 days to keep the service active.

Giffgaff use the O2 network and Asda use Vodafone.

Thanks very much Neil49. My present mobile contract is with EE and the reception is good.

I am indecisive about which mobile 'phone to buy for backup and, because of my poor hearing, I was drawn to Doro but, because of familiarity, I tend towards Moto G phones.

Motorola e15 64GB (4G but not 5G) mobile at Argos as it would be easy for me to collect.

I would welcome any opinions or suggestions.

Giffgaff, I see, uses 02 and the coverage is good in my area. I have requested a free Giffgaff SIM.

I'll post back with any update, thank you.
