Unknown debt / fraud ?

My son has just received a letter from Lowell , for an unpaid credit card from Capital One.

Looking on his credit report , it was opened / created in 2022.

He didn't live at that address then , and has been at his current address for the last 6 years, and he was 16 when he moved to the current address.

What can I do to help him?

Thanks .

  • Tell him not to panic.
On the face of it someone seems to have taken over his ID and applied for a card in his name.

Tell him to contact Lovells and say that it is not his debt.
Is the address that the card has been opened at familiar at all - family, friends or student accomadation etc at all?

Lovells should refer the debt  back to Capital One.
    Expect them to contact him.

Get him to check all of his credit files as a matter of urgency, in order to establish if anything else has been done in his name:

Not his job to assist them.

My guess would be it's a fishing exercise by Lowell

Just send a prove-it letter from the sticky threads over on debt-free wannabe.

If they persevere that is the forum to post on

The card is on his credit report - hardly phishing in my opinion.

    Send a prove-it

Then a complaint about them marking your file
