Unknown debt / fraud ?

in Credit cards
My son has just received a letter from Lowell , for an unpaid credit card from Capital One.
Looking on his credit report , it was opened / created in 2022.
He didn't live at that address then , and has been at his current address for the last 6 years, and he was 16 when he moved to the current address.
What can I do to help him?
Thanks .

Tell him not to panic.
On the face of it someone seems to have taken over his ID and applied for a card in his name.
Tell him to contact Lovells and say that it is not his debt.
Is the address that the card has been opened at familiar at all - family, friends or student accomadation etc at all?
Lovells should refer the debt back to Capital One.
Expect them to contact him.0 -
Get him to check all of his credit files as a matter of urgency, in order to establish if anything else has been done in his name:jackjones99 said:Looking on his credit report , it was opened / created in 2022.

Not his job to assist them.
My guess would be it's a fishing exercise by Lowell
Just send a prove-it letter from the sticky threads over on debt-free wannabe.
If they persevere that is the forum to post on0 -
The card is on his credit report - hardly phishing in my opinion.fatbelly said:Not his job to assist them.

Send a prove-it
Then a complaint about them marking your file0
