When the markets crash they jump ship some never to return.
Odds of you winning the game, is higher the longer you invest for.

olb81: For balance here is something else you should remember:
1. Anything to do with money will have some type of risk attached, all that changes is the type and size of that risk.
That includes money in that nice safe savings account protected by the FSCS up to £85000.
Here the risk is inflation, where the buying power of £100 will buy less over time.
A good yearly wage for a skilled working man in 1960's was £1000 per year.
