Thoughts on Humax Aura PVR?

  • The Humax site shows a date of June 2021 as the latest available software for the Aura… maybe they are not as quick to post on their website as the OBR 😂

@ian16527 probably has a beta firmware that Humax don't think is ready for wider distribution but will make available if there are no other options.

It appears that Humax Aura has been discontinued. It hasn't had any updates for a long while, so I guess there will not be any forthcoming.

If there are any out there to buy I would give it a miss. I've had one for about five years and it's worked fine, however, it's used very little these days with streaming taking the brunt of our TV catchup.

The Aura forum has closed down.

Neither Argos, nor Richer Sounds, have any Humax products and Humax themselves (Humax Direct) only show refurbished models. Amazon (or their market place shops) have one or two.

I'd always been a big fan of Humax but now they seem not to be so good and I'd recommend a Manhattan box - I'm a big fan of mine - I think I might have said this already earlier in the thread!

We use a PVR a lot, mainly to skip over ads. How do you get round that problem with streaming?

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

You can subscribe to ITV-X and 4+ then have them ad free if you wish. Channel 5 is all ad supported.

I used to use the Humax to skip ads, but, I watch very little live TV now and not a lot of terrestrial TV in general. So the ads on the odd catchup don't really bother me. But, if you binge TV then maybe a PVR would suit you better.

If you watch on a device like a laptop using the Firefox browser and the ad blocker uBlock Origin, it will automatically stop any adverts getting through for many catch up channels.

This probably also applies to some other browsers with other ad block extensions too, it's just I know the above example definitely works.

Not everyone will want to watch on a laptop of course, but it's relatively simple to send to your TV what is on your laptop.

Personally I wouldn't touch one and certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I have one - bought when released, and it has received precious little in the way of software updates (still shows 2021 as the last) and is very unstable in use. Keeps rebooting itself whilst watching anything, using any of the streaming apps usually requires multiple reboots as they either don't work, freeze or are incredibly buggy to use (Amazon app is unusable). Latest behaviour is the sound keeps stuttering - recent known issue with some kind of fix which does nowt to resolve the issue for me. When this Aura box works it's perfect, honestly. However, it is very unpredictable and so is extremely frustrating to use and a complete waste of money! Out of the warranty period so stuck with it and there's no equivalent other than the new Manhattan product. On the basis that Aura customers have been left in the lurch I'll never buy Humax again and that's coming from a long standing customer.
