Asda fuel, pay at pump

I dont know if this is the right place to ask, this may be a long one and I will try and explain as best I can.. so thanks in advance to anyone able to shed some light.
I went to asda pay at pump 1st Nov, as we all know they take a £99 'payment' and then take payment for whatever you spend, releasing the rest. So Im about to fuel up and realise I have picked up petrol - new car is diesel, put the hose back and the transaction ends. I have spent £0 but pending is the £51.30 I had in my bank. I wasn't able to get the diesel I needed as it had pended all the money I had in my account.
Few days pass and I am still waiting for the pending to be released back to me. I called my bank who told me to call asda as they may be able to cancel the transaction their end but barclays cant do anything with pending transactions. Call asda who weren't helpful and basically said to wait 7days.
The 7th day comes and I call asda again weren't helpful and told me to wait 10 days.
On the 10th day I notice the pending transaction has disappeared from my bank but there is no sign of the payment being made or returned back to me. I waited a few days for my bank to settle and called barclays today who told me that the payment hasnt been made and there is no discrepancy with my ins/outs so the payment essentially never existed, which i have checked myself and can see that. But I am confused because when the payment was pending the £51.30 was removed from my available.
Can someone please make it make sense!

  • The mechanism is what it is, slow and not clever.

Do you not have a credit card you could use instead? Would be an easy solution.

What you can see is a pending payment/pre-authorisation, it locks the money temporarily in this instance to make sure the funds are there and the driver does not drive off (hotels often do this on check in as well). Normally when there is a transaction the two link and it releases any difference, but I guess as there was no transaction in this case that was not able to happen. Apart from that they normally release in 7-10 working days, though it can be sooner, in rare circumstances it can take up to 28 days. It is one of the reasons that in petrol stations where they have these machines they often have signs saying to use a credit card rather than debit card. So in short, there never was a payment, there was a pre-authorisation, which expired after a period of time.

An authorisation doesnt take any money but simply ring fences it, so actual payments there are none, available balances reduces and most will show a pending transaction. This is normally released after either a transaction is made using the auth code from the same merchant or after X days pass. You won't see a reversed transaction because there was no actual money taken but the pending should disappear and the available balance increase.

Obviously with many people there are several payments that will have happened in those 10 days so actually spotting the changes can be different.

As said, in future use a credit card.
Other than you have the same problem if you are using up the last £51.30 of your available balance. Really the point is to have more than one payment method so you can switch if needed.

Card regulation for these types of purchases is 14 days or 10 working days
OP needs to ring their bank & ask them to remove the authorisation (Disputes Team as a rule) not front line call center.
They will warn them that it does not remove the authorisation, just frees up the funds. Retailer could still debit.

The pending payment has been released.

The OP doesn’t understand why no withdrawal  and refund show on their bank statement.

Ok but it is probably more likely that someone will have very low  funds in their current account, than be bumping up against there credit card limit.
  • I dont have a credit card and I wasn't in massive need of filling up, just did so as I was there, otherwise would of filled up using another payment method, I was just wondered if it is right to see a pending transaction disappear without seeing where its gone (not showing as a + or - amount) but as explained it wasnt a transaction so I wouldn't see that! At least I realised and didnt put the wrong fuel in my car eh!
