Getting DWP Debts Written Off With Tax Credits Overpayments & Universal Credit Overpayments

Hello  Guys n Gals

Here is a bit of my background. I am a vulnerable person with many health problems including severe mental health problems, i also have financial problems and other debts including credit cards. I claim PIP and Universal credits with the uplift. Each month I get £5 deducted from my Universal Credit however it should be a £100 pound. I got them to reduce the amount taken out each month And that runs out in July 2027.

Can anyone tell me what debts can be written off as I read different contradictions Online. Some websites say that both debts can be written off And some say that these particular debts cannot be written off. Can anyone please clarify the situation. I may end contacting one of the debt charities to help and advice.

Many thanks. Robert

Neither of those debts can be written off and will continue to be deducted from your benefits.  Although the current £5 agreement will end it doesn't mean it can't be renewed.

Please get help with your credit cards if they are unaffordable, you shouldn't be paying unsecured debts at the detriment to your food, housing and warmth needs.

Many thanks for the clarification sammyjammy and helpful reply.

I thought the £5 payments wer due to go back to the full amount but its actually ok until July 2027.

Fortunately i am able to afford the minimum payments to the credit cards, i have 0% interest cards. ;)

Paying back the minimum isn't going to clear the credit card debt any time soon, and what will you do when you are unable to get another 0% interest card.  You really do need to get debt advise as soon as possible.  Given your situation, I would try Citizens Advice as a first step.

  • The only debts that are deducted from UC are usually Council Tax, Court Fines, Water, Gas and other utilities and government debts like Social Fund, Tax Credit overpayments etc. Any unsecured debt like Credit Card debt can be safely ignored(they threaten with bailiffs but just keep doors and windows locked, they can't do anything)and is not deducted from UC. Never go without food and utilities in order to pay unsecured debt.

There is a few routes you can go with your debt, a lot of these can be accessed for free.  Sadly if you google them, the pay for services are easily found.
