Advice - mechanic issues

Good morning, I was hoping for some advice. I have an old banger (2000) that recently cost me a lot of money in that the fuel tank needed replacing, followed by a hefty MOT.

This was 1-2 months ago, and nearly £900 poorer, my car is making the same sounds it made when the fuel tank failed, and I think it's the same issue. I did raise that starting up the car felt more strangled, but got the response that they drove my car and felt no issues.

I wanted to ask, where do I stand on this? I had a few bad experiences with this garage and it was a pretty poor service, where I went back and forth multiple times because they either didnt fix the issue or I had new issues (steering for example)

So if I paid out for this again, I'm wondering if I had a leg to stand on because their part replacement didnt seem to fix the problem.

Just in case anyone asks why I paid out, the garage was meant to do an mot and price me up, but instead they replaced the part and forgot the mot. They also held my car hostage for nearly 2 weeks before putting it on the ramp and I need it for work.

Any thoughts or feedback are appreciated. I really do think I get stiffed a lot when I go to garages.

Thank you

Did you supply any parts or did they source everything too?

What has a failed fuel tank got to do with noise?

You had a bad experience, take your business elsewhere.

A replacement part didn't fix the issue, but was the part faulty and you have several issues?

    Held your car hostage?  Why?

I thought a garage overcharged me and did not do a proper repair so I started doing them myself but initially
it actually cost more than paying the garage buying the tools to do the work myself.

Eventually I had enough tools to do jobs for others and would sometimes do jobs for the price of a tool alone.

If you don't trust that garage, use a different one. That really is the only answer...

As far as the "noise" and the fuel tank... There's only one reason a fuel tank needs replacing, and that's damage. In the old days, that might have been from rust - but tanks have been plastic for many years. Even a 2000 car would be unlikely to be steel. So it can really only be physical damage from hitting things.
If it were rust, or contamination from grot inside the tank, then the pump inside the tank might be making noise as it tries to suck fuel through, and that could restrict performance at high fuel demand - when you're CLOGGING it.
From trying to interpret your description of a vague noise and the car "feeling strangled", I wonder if there might be a slight leak in a fuel hose or connection, and some air's being sucked in?
Otherwise, if the pump was replaced, it might have been a poor quality cheap and nasty pump, and that's failed quickly.

But without a chunk more detail, like a description or video of the noise, and a better clue as to what "feeling strangled" means, we're guessing wildly, especially not even knowing if we're talking about a petrol or diesel car.
