Decorating a knitted scarf

I'm trying to make a scarf with 3D fluffy clouds, mirrored on both sides of the scarf. Initially my idea was to felt the clouds on, then I realised I couldn't see through the scarf to know where I was stabbing (to have the same shape on both sides) and the felting would probably cause the scarf to warp at that point.

So i tried cutting out consecutively larger clouds and sewing those on to felt a larger onto. It looks a bit pants so I'd have to try and cover the stitches and I don't think they will stand up to any tugging on them (see pic).

Any other ideas?

Is this a scarf you've made, or one you've bought? Could you re-knit it with the clouds in?

Thanks Emmia, one I made. Not sure my skills are at colour work yet, but I may have to give it a go.

you could push white wool through like you do for making rugs.  Rug hooking or punching?  so you could have one side the cloud would be flat and on the other it would be tufted.  next cloud could be the other way around.  Sorry if this doesn't make sense  - I can see how to do it in my brain but would be hard pushed to described it any better.
