For ages I've pondered where people get 50p chickens etc...

  • When I was a student one of my housemates had a part-time supermarket job. She'd worked there for a while so she had the BEST part-time supermarket job a gang of skint students could hope for...

She was in charge of the reductions in 'rotten corner' (!). I don't think any group of students could have hoped to have eaten better.

    Ahhh... those were the days...

    :D

On another note: I snapped up three half price organic chickens that wouldn't be out of date for another 3 days. The shop was closed for 2 days over new years (Scotland). Hub and I only eat *happy* meat so that was a real find!

Martin has done some research and found a pattern in when supermarkets do their reductions although obviously it will vary from store to store.

I dont think they do the bargains like they used to - or certainly you have to be lucky to get them before they sell out. It seems that people have cottoned on to it, and a lot more people go shopping later in the evenings so they can afford to save the biggests reductions til later.
Often when I shop during the day the chuckout counter stuff has only 10% or so knocked off it.
Also it really annoys me when they have 'faulty' stuff, such as a box of 6 eggs with some broken, or 2 yogurts have been snapped off a 6 pack but they only offer a one third discount, so your still paying the same per yogurt.
Much as I love the reduced counter, a lot of stuff on there is still more expensive than for e.g. downshifting a brand.

I'm one of the 10p people and so is the rest of the family. At the moment my chest freezer is full to the top with 10p meat and a pile of seriously reduced party food which is really handy as DS1 is having a 21 birthday party later this month. My DD is the worst, she's only 8 but she stalks the women with the sticker gun like a lioness on the savanah and pleads to go bargain hunting most nights.

I've noticed that in ASDA they often have the HUGE pizzas on good reductions in the evenings.

These are way too big for my stingy little oven but I've found that I can cut them into quarters or sixths (there's only OH and myself) when I buy them and then clingfilm individually BEFORE freezing. Absolutely great - and it means that we can have a different pizza each as we don't like the same ones!
