Mortgage direct debit returned

On 28/10/25 I received a text msg from my bank NatWest to advise I had insufficient funds. I transferred straight away approx 2:30pm that day.
I checked the following day and on my NatWest mobile banking the direct debit listing showed as paid.
A week later I received an email from my mortgage lender HSBC advising my direct debit had been returned unpaid on 28/10/25.
I didn’t receive any notification from my bank NatWest to advise this and I did transfer across sufficient funds to cover the direct debit payment for my mortgage
HSBC advise that this late payment will be reported on my credit file.
i make flexible overpayments to my HSBC mortgage and have never ever missed a payment.

I had also made an overpayment at the beginning of October in the same month that the direct debit payment was returned.
I am now really very worried that this will affect my credit history
I did a google research for this issue. It stated most lenders don’t report unless you have missed a payment over 30 days late, but did say HSBC do not state this in their terms and conditions
Please can anyone offer any advice or suggestions what I could do.

"One swallow doth not make a summer" and one late payment will barely be noticeable or have any detrimental affect on you in the long run.
HSBC have stated their official line in their standard computer generated "late payment email".
In reality I very much doubt it will be marked as late, especially if it was paid the same day.
I suggest you don`t dwell on it any further, and enjoy your weekend.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Have HSBC re-requested the DD and if so when was it paid?0

Yeah, this is unclear. I generally leave my RBS/Natwest accounts with a zero balance and pay in as needed when they tell me in the morning that there are insufficient funds for a transaction to go out (they have a couple of DDs each for the Rewards thing.) They give me until 3:30PM to pay in the funds and they always get paid.Ayr_Rage said:Have HSBC re-requested the DD and if so when was it paid?
So what happened here, OP? HSBC would only know if it was unpaid if it was... unpaid. If HSBC claim it was unpaid then the funds must have not left your account.0
