can i still get student loan during bankruptcy?

Hi guys need your help please...

I am mature medical student who went bankrupt a few weeks ago...just had a horrifying thought...

I was wondering if during bankruptcy i will still be able to get student loan next summer. The loan is very important is it is pretty much one of the main source of income during the year?

They do say you cannot obtain credit of more then £500 during your bankruptcy..

Look forward to your answer - ( cant get through to OR office will try again in a bit)

I would contact the loan company first to see if you will be allowed to apply for one and then the OR to see if they will allow it.

As you say, you cannot apply for credit of over £500 BUT ( I think) this is without disclosing your status ie. you must tell them that you are BR.

Student loans are not written off by BR so it may be that the rules are different for application?

thanks for that just called the OR office and the young lady said the same as you need to check with loans company but need to disclose the fact that i am bankrupt.

ok folks, just spoke to Student loans company - the answer is yes.

You can apply for a student loan if you are bankrupt.

PHEW...thanks God for that.

Bit late on the bandwagon, I know you've had the yes answer from the Student Loan co, but just to confirm that my oh had & also reapplied for a student loan when we were declared BR & never had any probs or extra questions/paperwork to fill in with regards to it. Don't think anything has changed so all should go through smoothly & good luck with your studies.

I know these messages were sent ages ago but I ahve a question that I hope someone can answer. I am about to go bankcrupt in two weeks, I will recive my last payment of student loan and bursary payment in april/may what i want to know is will this payment have to be stopped or can i still have it? secondly do i have to declare my student loans because it is not included in the bankcrupcy, and finally will this income be put towards paying back my debts? I would appreciate it if someone could answer these questions

My student loan will be paid mid April, I am planning to go BR in May so that our tenancy is renewed for another year and we have that security. The money will already be paid out by then, I took out the student loan to pay for my wedding so I'll guess I'll have to wait and see what the OR makes of that one..
