As you think so little of the suppliers, why not go totally off-grid? You're not legally obligated to pay for any energy supply if you don't use it.

would I meet you in the woods or under motorway bridge, since your trust for "agents", "suppliers" - middle-persons - charlatans would've left you broke and homeless there? 🤣
On a serious note, I'm fine to pay what's fair, but any sneaky tricksters robbing everyone and imagining being clever does trigger me somewhat…

The energy exit fee can be compared to a restaurant or hotel retaining a deposit if you cancel at short notice or are a No Show.
The company is likely to lose money because they're left with an empty table or room that they cannot fill. The deal was that (i) you would stay for (most of) the duration and that in return (ii) they wouldn't change their rates.
Therefore it's completely fair if they charge a fee because you failed to honour the agreement you chose and to which you signed up.

if I'm booking a restaurant and someone asks for deposit, I'll make alternative reservations at MacciesD's ;
If a hotel, I've booked asked to be paid up front, but once there I'd find room not ready or lacking staff or whatever else, I'll get alternative one and will claim my money back with help of all sorts of institutions. If they'd (middle-persons like booking.com) ask for a fee just for a booking (not a discount), I'll offer them getting a job at MaccieD's
Irrelevant parallels.

I believe this whole thread is a scam and entrapping us in a circle of discussion.
I have the same sort of conversations with neighbours and sometimes you just have to accept they really don't want hard facts to change their views.

Indeed, my personal pet-hate exit-fees-penalties somewhat side-tracked from a subject of Home_Energy supplier costs (tariffs, rates), reputation.
The only really useful post/subject recently on this matter is on page 4:
it's the tariff/plan, that's lowest/cheapest in my circumstances and most importantly not a scam (no exit-fee's implied)… which to me (and supplier) means- I might even stay with them for longer, than usual yo-yo - change after 12 months.
As for experience so far- no probs, got my account set up, readings accepted, got confirmation email of, another DD confirmation and reminder for new readings. So far, I've no reason to complaint about HomeEnergy… not that I've had real complaints about Octopus, except their new rates going up as expected and new plans having exit-fee's
