Looking at the box, there is signs the side of this wheel has had an impact, but its a very thick box and cant collapse due to a metal bike inside. It was marked 'this way up' so should not have been put on its side, if they followed

I tend to agree with the earlier comment regarding the adequacy of packaging.  Parcels are not handled gently and certainly 'this way up' signs are likely to be ignored.

It looks as if this should have been packed within another box to give it more protection, so that being placed on its side or upside-down would not lead to damage.

I would add to the ‘this side up’ comment that it depends on whether this was a specialist courier or just a run of the mill one. A specialist bike or large item courier can be expensive but often have the man power to carry goods correctly . A run of the mill courier just gets goods from A to B (via CD and E usually) and there is a time pressure to get things in and out of bulk cages for transportation and sorting, it has probably been machine sorted as well, so expecting an item to be carried right side up is a little optimistic.
