ULEZ misunderstanding on payment timeframe - grounds for appeal?

Hi All,

This week I drove into ULEZ in my dirty diesel on Wednesday and left on Thursday. My understanding is that I had up to 3 days to pay the charges due. As it's Sunday today I've come to pay but was only able to pay for Thursday. Upon further reading I now understand that it was up to 3 days to pay for each day i.e. Wednesday would have to be paid yesterday (Saturday).

This was a misunderstanding but I accept that it was ultimately my mistake. Will I get a fine for the Wednesday and considering this is my first ever time driving in London and it's a genuine misunderstanding, (I live 150 miles away) do I have any grounds to appeal? I did have the intention of paying obviously as have paid for the Thursday. Do they take pity on out of towners under these circumstances?

Also, if I do appeal, would this mean I forfeit the chance to halve the penalty by paying within 14 days?

I hadn't intentionally left it to what I thought was the 3rd day, it's just been one of those busy weekends and thought I was safe as long as I paid it today.

Thanks in advance.

As we major on private parking tickets here, Free Traffic Legal Advice (FTLA) forum will be your best bet for council penalty charges. Register there but please note that a Hotmail address may not work - try using a throwaway Gmail account instead if you do have trouble registering, and post a new thread; here's your link:

Read the sticky 'Read this first before posting your case' as well as reading through some of the other threads there ahead of posting your own details, to get the hang of what information they need from you in your opening post - but as a minimum you will need to post redacted photos/scans of all correspondence you've received from the council (both sides, if appropriate), as they need to see all the small print, and possibly a Google Street View link.
Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .

I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.
