Many thanks @Emmia - my wife also dislikes double knots so the Salomon certainly seem worth a look.
We have a branch of Go Outdoors near to us that stocks Salomon and Merrell trainers so that will be an easy compare. There is also a North Face store a couple of miles away from that.
