I think that you should be honest and say that due to online negative reviews that you feel uncomfortable leaving them in your home.

They can either offer an explanation or accept what you say.

Why would you pay for a service from a questionnable person that you are not going to receive?
It wasn't negative online reviews that made the OP change their mind - it was information from a different source.  There doesn't seem to be any question that the sitter would provide the service paid for - just that the OP no longer feels comfortable with them in their home.

but I have met a "professional house sitter" and they tour the globe house/pet sitting with no home of their own so the loss of accommodation would be more of a problem for them.
Friends of ours fell into that category and were messed about a few times.  They didn't charge a fee, apart from travel costs, and had a situation where they were flying to the USA to sit for an extended period.  Literally a few days before they were due to travel they received an e-mail simply saying the people had changed their minds, were no longer going away, so wouldn't need them!  Fortunately the organisation they got their booking from got them another sitting in the USA but quite a long way from the original.  They had no home of their own, but occasionally crashed at one of their kids' homes.
