Transfer from card in Partners name

Haven't been doing balance transfers for a few years now but have got back into the game and trying to transfer a balance from a Natwest card in my name to a Lloyd's one in my wife's name but Lloyd's keep rejecting it. Has there been some change of rules about transferring a balance from a card in another person's name?

Some banks only take transfers in your own name.
As you have to remember that a balance transfer from another name makes it your debt. Which could be part of the reason behind not allowing.Life in the slow lane0 -
Are you trying to do the transfer online, or over the phone? Anecdotally, you can sometimes get away with it online. But strictly speaking, most banks won't actually allow you to transfer the debt from one name to another.0

Online. Used to regularly do this in the past no problem which is why I wondered if there had been a rule change.CliveOfIndia said:Are you trying to do the transfer online, or over the phone? Most banks say you can only transfer debts that are in your own name, in the good olds days they had to trust you when you said it was but these days with OpenBanking they can check for themselves. Not all have implemented checking even if the terms say you can only do to your name but some certainly have.s71hj said:Haven't been doing balance transfers for a few years now but have got back into the game and trying to transfer a balance from a Natwest card in my name to a Lloyd's one in my wife's name but Lloyd's keep rejecting it. Presumably its also your wife doing this given she is going to be the recipient of your debt?
One option is to use a money transfer card instead of a balance transfer. She'll need to move the cash into an account in her name but is then free to pass it to you for you to pay off your card... downside is transfer rates tend not to be as good as BT (though some are the same).0 -
So I suspect this was something we got away with in the past but we didn't realise we were getting away with anything but now it automatically gets refused! Hey ho!0

You could get a money transfer card which would achieve the same thing and pay the card off on 0%
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

We tried this with a nationwide account and it was rejected as not being hubbys account. He opted for a 0% money transfer that was also offered and paid my card that way.0

Well, although this wouldn't work when we put my card number into the application once the card was showing in her Lloyd's app, it was accepted and the balance has now gone from my Natwest and is showing on her Lloyd's card. Additionally there were no questions regarding whether the balance being transferred was a debt in her own name.1
