Wrong entry on credit file, huge impact - where do I stand?

Hi,
So earlier in the year I completed a energy switch from one supplier to another as my cheap deal had reached the end of term.
EDF agreed the handover meter readings and all was well I thought.
New payments have gone via direct debit to new supplier, old direct debit still live to clear/refund any over or under payments.

Fast forward a few months and I had a random email from Barclaycard, my daily spending credit card to advise my credit limit is being reduced immediately! This was to just over my current balance, a cut of approx 80%.

I had no idea why so access my credit files, there i found an entry from EDF for a debt arrangement being out into place followed by 2 days later an account settled marker. This was all for the amount of £52 which was my final bill which they took by direct debit.....albeit, 2 months after the energy switched over.

I have spoken to Barclaycard whom I had a 0% deal with who have confirmed they acted on a transunion alert of the debt arrangement marker being listed. They will not replace or consider reverting back my credit limit for at least 28 days as it is now seen as a request to raise and will do so in there normal terms.

My credit rating is excellent across all 3 agencies.

EDF have admitted their mistake and removed the marker, they can't tell me why they did it in the first place but admit their fault.
Now where do I stand in compensation, their mistake has caused me and will continue to cause financial complications for quite some time. The credit card was taken out for a purpose a while ago to ensure no hard searches in the lead up to a new mortgage application. I don't want to apply for a new card for that reason right now, but I also have lost my good rate card with zero interest which was in preparation for house move expenses etc.

EDF think £50 is full and final resolution and that my credit position is probably not so good and that they may have pushed barclaycard to that point but they can't be the sole reason.

Any ideas, advice?

So what financial loss have you actually incurred?

Barclaycard are notorious for slashing unused credit limits even without anything adverse on a credit report and will always just say because of your credit file. What was the limit reduced to and from. What was your balance.

And why do you think it will affect you long term if the marker has been removed?
  • No financial loss, other than 4 hours on the phone during a working day to try and speak to them to establish what had happen and to get them to rectify it.
Its the financial impact. If you take responsibility by applying for credit carefully in the lead up to large applications I.e another mortgage, having left a 6 month gap since obtaining the credit card so that it can be utilised for extra expenses.
Limit was 9500, now £1000, balance was £980, always cleared in full. Plus, Whilst barclaycard as all lenders will never go into detail about how they judge an individual, have specifically confirmed that they reduced limit as a result of EDFs misinformation.

  • But as things stand there is no financial impact is there? You haven't applied for and been refused credit because of the error.

You have a reduced credit limit which may be increased without a hard search.

You may squeeze another £50 out of them and if you are still not happy you can go to the FOS but you don't get compensation for a might have.
