Fixed tariff ending, when to switch

My fixed tarrif with Octopus is ending mid December, I have been offered to switch to a new fixed or variable.

The new fixed is obviously slightly more expensive than my current one. Do I switch now or hold off until nearer the time. I realise the offer may change and the next fixed may be even more expensive so am I better off changing now and saving in the long run

If you are within your 49 day exit fee exempt period, you can switch now but specify the start date as the end date of your current tariff. You will then secure the price of the offered tariff. Why not get some comparison price quotes rather than just accepting your current supplier's offerings?

Thank you, I thought they would just move me over straight away to the new tariff which is why I was hessitant.
I've just done a comparison and it is more expensive than others generally but a lot of the other options are companies I've never heard of. I don't have a smart meter though so I'm not sure if that makes a difference? I am unable to see if it tells me if i need a smart meter for those tarriffs
Octopus have never put any pressure on me to get one which i have appreciated.

I guess I've always thought Octopus were one of the better suppliers but that isn't always the most cost effective reason I guess.

If you were to get your meter swapped for an up to date one of course, there would be many more tariffs available to you, a good number of which might be far cheaper than anything you can currently take up.
