How many extra months on UK passport for US travel?

Hi all

I'm off to Florida next December and we fly back on 9th January 2027.

My passport expires May 2027, but was issued April 2017 so I'm going to assume it will expire April 2027.  This is still three months after I return so am assuming this is going to be OK/
UK Gov's website just says it needs to be valid for the entire stay out there and that if you're transiting through other countries some might want up to six months extra.

That's the current advice, want to bet that it will be the same in 14 months?

I took the view before a recent overseas trip that I wanted a clear 6 months to expiry on my return date, the passport expired 4 months after return.

Bit the bullet and renewed, the "wasted" months are annoying but worth it for the peace of mind IMHO.

Look at the cost as being less than a tenner a year, makes it a bit more palatable.

current rules - no extra months required, passport must be valid for the duration of the stay
Your passport expiry date printed on the passport (May 2027) is the expiry date

Thanks both.  I'm doing New York May 25 so I've done my ESTA early.  Didn't want to do my passport now 18 months early and I don't want to have to redo my ESTA again for Disney later in the year and pay another $40 (I should have done it last month when it was $21).  I'll keep an eye on the entry advice and if I have to redo it I do....

Just to check you are flying straight to America and not through a European country as that makes a difference

    Assume you mean May 26?

Thanks Chapea, yes straight from LHR on both trips NY and Florida.

Sorry TadleyBaggie, you're correct. May 26 (if I can get there cheap enough with my Virgin Credit Card 🤞)
