Hey
As per title
Today, one of the family members noted a leak from the first floor, ie water marks on the ceiling.
This was around 1pm.
The leaks sorted via tracing, pulling up carpet on the landing, vinyl on one of the bathrooms - cutting floors - thankfully fixed, floorboard refixed, carpets and bathroom floor re-layed - took him just
under 2 hours cost 380 quid. He did work fast, none-stop and the leak was where we though it was but intially felt having looked at the area it was further down. We had checked with several plumbers re callout and estimates, and callouts ranged for 100 to 170 for the first hour.
However, it is difficult to compare quotes etc as the plumber and you don't know how long it will take
The plumber finnished in about 1hr 50 mins - but he worked fast/hard and knew what he was dowing. I guess som others would have taken 3/5 hours
Hence, us and our family members are deciding to go for plumbing cover, often sold as plumbing and drain cover.
Noted BG, do one for just over 5 quid a month and 66 callout. Does anyone have BG. The bottom line you
dont want to call them out but if the worse happens, at least you know where you stand, therefore its for peace of mind
What is your monthly cost for plumb and drain cover, and by how much did it go up after 12 months?
The leak was where the pipe had been kinked over a joist - orginal pipe from the date the house ws built in 1979 we guess.
I guess it was cheaper than some but at least it got sorted. and not too much water damage - the celing can by touched up with Zinser when dry, could have been much worse as they fly out Monday
on hols for a week.

A few things to consider...
How often will such leaks occur? Now that you've had one, statistically another won't happen for more than a decade.
(Kidding!)
But, seriously, how often will you have a leak like this? And, if you do have a damaging one, why don't you call on your house insurance - that's what it's for?
This hard working guy - why don't you have him on speed dial for whenever you don't call on your house insurance?
Check your house policy - see how much 'home emergency' cover is as an add-on. And obvs check what it includes.
In essence, check whether there are alternatives, and also whether you are better off saving your money towards an incident that 'might' occur. But likely won't.0 -
How many leaks did you have in the last 5 years? If this one was the only one, £60*5+£66=£366, i.e. you could have self-insured yourself by saving £60 p.a.My house is about 15 years younger, but I live here for 25 years and didn't have any leaks.1

I have got this cover when I got an offer for £1 a month. I figure for £12 over a year I'm either going to save a lot of money if something bad happens and won't miss the amount if it doesn't. It was particularly reassuring when an elderly family member started flushing more things down the toilet than it would normally be able to handle. We resolved that eventually but I was concerned just in case there was a blockage which the policy would have sorted for us.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. I had this for many years. It is Dyno Rod who come out as BG own them too. My bathroom was leaking water into the ceiling of the pharmacy below my flat. Dyno Rod came out and were reluctant to do anything. One of them told me to phone a plumber as "plumbers can do things we cant do".
Eventually they smashed up the floor tiles and cut through floor boards and found the leak where a pipe had seperated at the join. In the process of all this they chipped my shower tray too and never told me, he hid this with all the sawdust they left on the floor.
When they reconnected my cistern and left, it was now leaking. It was all eventually fixed but took many different visits and was stress central. Not just the leak but dealing with Dyno Rod.
A year later, the pharmacy reported leaking again from my flat. This time I called plumber and it was the same pipe and join. The plumber said the piece of pipe should have been replaced, not just reconnected. By this time I had cancelled the plumbing and drains cover.
So my experience is not to waste any money on this cover and get a professional in. Dyno Rod were not professionals.

Get to know a good plumber, it seems that you've done that, and never lose his contact details.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.1

I did the same when I was offered that. I was switching to a water meter at the time so figured it made sense if it turned out I had an undetected slow leak. Just make sure you remember to cancel when they send you the renewal letter for 20x the cost.Brie said:I have got this cover when I got an offer for £1 a month.
