How long does it take for my new car registration to show up on the Car Ins data base

I was supposed to pick up my new car today but they only registered the plate today and none of the insurance companies will insure me because they can't find it on the data base.  I can't use the complimentary insurance provided by the car dealership because I am too old!!!!  (You can imagine my reaction!)
I'm being told all sorts of times it will take for my new plates to show up on the data base - 2 hours, 2 days, a week.  Does anyone have first hand experience of this?

Try Googling "VIN insurance", seem to be a fair few companies offering short-term insurance for not-yet registered vehicles.

There is no singular source, most big boys will do a live query to the DVLA so it should be quick. Some smaller firms may buy it via resellers who'll typically be slower. Some maybe do something funky with a periodic data dump rather than live link.

I remember with my new car most showed it by the time I went to collect which was probably 2 days after it was registered but one of the big names still wasnt showing by then which I was surprised about.

Most give you a option to enter car by details, rather than reg no.

From my experience of two new cars within last 18 months it seems to take about 4 working days from registration before the Reg Number is recognised to populate the make, model, variant bit (by Aviva anyway).  But like born_again said you can usually put the car details in manually along with the reg number even if it doesn't recognise it and automatically find make, model etc.

Similar recent experience it turned up on DVLA system by the end of the day it was registered/collected and on MIB/Navigate the following day, but model not recognised by systems.

Car was insured by entering the reg number, system said 'not recognised' and details of make and model entered. Certificate of insurance printed and kept in car until it snowed up on Navigate.
