Quality duvet/quilt help

Hi guys! OK so I've exhausted google and chat gpt. I just want a quilt that fits a standard duvet cover. I've bought cheap duvet sets and slightly more expensive that are lovely quality, yet they just never fit the quilt properly! It's driving me insane. Just put a new one on and decided to gather the loose edge and measure what isn't coming to the edge of the inside of the cover. Just over 9 inches.
I think the issue is the quilt itself, it has its own outer layer which is all puffed up and not really attached to the "filling". Can anyone tell me a specific material I need to look for when looking for a new quilt? As I've bought several over the years and they all seem to be like this.
My mum has duvets from the 90s that are literally perfect, you cant pull a few inches of material away from the filling, it appears to be one piece. She said  would've got them from Argos, nothing fancy! Googling this now just gives me hundreds of results for buying the cheapest duvet 🤦‍♀️

I have all seasons 4.5 + 9 tog feather quilts which you join together / separate to suit your needs.  They were purchased from Debenhams a few years ago and when looking for a quilt it was the cover I was looking at, I wanted a thick cotton cover and to me this makes all the difference to the heat and the longevity of the quilt itself.

I've also got 13.5? tog feather quilts, a few years old and relegated to the spare room, again really thick cotton covers on them and these were purchased from one of the tv shopping channels so worth checking even their online stores for these.

M & S was another place I remember looking at who had half decent cotton covered feather duvets, there wasn't much in it at the time when I got my all seasons one from Debenhams.  Think Debenhams pipped it as they had stock at the time.

Regardless of the filling you chose, check the outer cover, it really does make a difference.

Hi, thanks for this, so I'm looking for "cotton cover" when looking at actual duvets? Will bear this in mind, thanks, I only ever look for a maximum of 10 tog for the coldest winter nights as my room stays quite warm. 100% agree its the outer cover thats the problem, it almost makes me think I should buy a king size quilt and double duvet sets!

You might consider a wool duvet, never had this problem, they also keep you cool when its hot and warm when its not, they are a considered purchase but I got mine in an outlet store from The Wool Room.  Environmentally friendly too.

we've had this problem also, and we have a very thick duck-down duvet.  I can only guess that although the duvet covers are standardised (i.e. double, king etc) there is probbaly quite a few mm deviation to allow for much thicker duvets.  It's very annoying

That's a huge gap. There's definitely something wrong here.
Measure your cover. What size is it?

I've had same problem for years, I now wash all new duvet covers on a hot wash which shrinks them to just the right size.

European sizing is different to the UK and certainly we've had cases of stuff being sold in the UK from European manufacturers being notably a different size though it was packaged as being for the UK market.

I had to look at the dates because I took have the Four Seasons two piece duvet back from the 80s 😊
Cotton covered hollow fill, stitched in lengths.
The spring tog gave up after 30yrs but the autumn one is still fine.

I think there's a bit of extra with the new duvet cover but not an old one. I'll try it tonight and see.

Another vote for wool.  Baa-vet in our case.  We have the extra-light version, which probably equates to a 6 tog, and is fine all year round.

Loved it so much we went back and bought the mattress topper as well.
