    Y-plan has a single thrre-port valve that can send water from the boiler to heating, hot water or both. S-plan has two or more two-port valves, one for hot water and one (or more) for heating zones.
    Y plan is the cheap and cheerful version.

    It's not quite the same thing,  but I have a thermal store (centeal heating water in the cylinder and DHW passes theough a heat exchanger. This is a modern store and you can see the heat loss through the day from the graph below. I  had a shower just after which is why the lower part of the store dropped in temp and ran the heating just before 6pm.
