EDF cancelled DD for existing debt

Hi, has anyone experienced EDF cancelling a DD for a debt and not getting in contact?
I set up a DD with EDF to pay remaining monies owed due to switching to a cheaper energy company. For over a year the DD came out my account without much thought, I logged into the EDF app today to check on it and noticed it said the debt was written off? After calling them i found out they had written the debt off and sent it to what i think is an in house collection service - which I'm so annoyed about. In the 6 months that the DD wasn't paid they have not contacted me to inform me of what's happened.
Has this happened to anyone else, I feel this was an issue with EDF as i didn't cancelled the DD

Did it explicitly say the debt had been written off? That doesn't marry with your saying its been sent to a collection service?

Did EDF confirm they had cancelled the DD or are you just assuming that because you did not cancel it? If EDF did not confirm that, you really should check with your bank why it stopped.

A write off means the debt is cancelled, no longer exists, creditor or someone else takes the hit on it.
Instead it seems they may have just passed the debt on to a collection service, so I think you need to ask for more details to be sure of whats happened
