I also want something simple to alter but still trying to get someone to fit it.
    Good luck

My best move was installing a Drayton Wiser.  Cost me £99 from Screwfix  and simply replaced the existing programmer, similar unit to as shown in your post, 2 screws releases the old unit and clip the new one on, no wiring involved and the thermostat goes wherever you want it. To replace yours like for like costs £65 to £ 85 !  Then all the programming and timings are done through the app.  Can turn the heating on or off or adjust the temperature whilst laying in bed or even when 500 miles away !  Changing the timings is done sitting in your armchair rather than with your head stuck in the airing cupboard looking at the stupid small screen and swearing when your adjustment times out. Going on holiday ?  Set away mode with a low temp to stop any risk of freezing then switch back to normal whilst travelling home, toasty house and tank of hot water on arrival.

We've just had a Hive Mini fitted, but for 20 years before that we had a Drayton RTS series manual thermostat, a bit like this one:
It worked well enough that we'd still be using it if the Hive hadn't been bundled "free" with our recent boiler replacement. The installer even suggested that we keep it in case we ever wanted to go back to a manual one!

Ahfat, if you want a good basic 'stat, then QrizB's above is ideal.
If you want more options, the link from 2penny's post has that.
A photo of your current one is still helpful.
