We have all heard of useing cooking oil as an alternative to diesel.

A week or two ago someone told me you can use cooking oil in unleaded cars as long as you don't use too much ie 2-3 pints every 2-3 tank fills.

Can anyone tell me if this is correct?

What is the point? 2 pints for every 300?

You could easily save more by driving sympathetically (i.e. no harsh acceleration/braking, not using fans or A/C more than necessary, etc.) if you don't already. The article has more info about this :)

I know I wouldn't try this - the huge costs of repairs if it causes problems outweigh the tiny savings...

aardvaak, I think there's a bit of mis information here. Adding cooking oil to unleaded petrol will damage the engine surely. Petrol is a volatile hydrocarbon at ambient temperatures; cooking oil cannot be considered to be volatile except perhaps when its boiling! I can only imagine that considerable damage would be caused to the engine. Any bona fide car mechanics out there ?

I've read something about adding acetone, but apparently it can eat petrol pipes. Basically I'd just use petrol. There's bioethanol e85 or whatever it is but cars need expensive conversions to run it. If unhappy about petrol costs and doing lots of miles, why not look around for an old diesel where cooking oil is almost guaranteed to cause no problems?!
