Car Insurance & being covered

Having got things wrong recently relating to car insurance I'm going to go ahead & ask a dumb question just to be sure to have the right answer.
We're now down to 1 car.
OH had her car written off & got a letter from the insurance saying her insurance has been "suspended", her old car is not insured & she's no longer covered for driving other cars.
On the car we own which is in my name & the policy on it is also in my name, my OH is listed as a named driver.
In there somewhere I'm guessing there was the question does she have access to another car & I'll have said yes.
So 1) I'm guessing I'm now going to need to get back in touch with them to say she doesn't own another car. And then get back in touch with them again in days/weeks when we buy another?
2) So say I've contacted them & told them she doesn't own another car (even though we're with the same company & one of the questions was does anyone else at your house have a direct line policy) ......... is she covered on my car because she's a named driver or does she need her own policy on her own car anyway?

I would say if she is buying another car soon, then should be Ok not to let them know on your policy.
As to driving other cars as a named driver. I would guess not. But you would need to read through the policy docs on that one. As many policies do not offer driving other cars even for policy holder.Life in the slow lane0 -
2) If she is on your car as a named driver then she can drive your car under your insurance. Nothing else needed. She almost certainly can't drive other cars under that policy but may be able to do so if she has her own car and insurance policy for it that allows that.B0bbyEwing said:2) So say I've contacted them & told them she doesn't own another car (even though we're with the same company & one of the questions was does anyone else at your house have a direct line policy) ......... is she covered on my car because she's a named driver or does she need her own policy on her own car anyway?
No need to inform the insurance company if you are planning to get another car.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.1 -
If she is a named driver on your policy, then when she is driving your car she is covered by the same insurance as you - typically fully comp, so her own policy wouldn't apply. If she was utilising the driving other cars cover from her own policy while driving your car, then she will only be covered for third party cover. Named drivers aren't usually covered for driving other cars - my policy is specific on that. DL might be different. If you end up with 2 cars again, you will either need 2 policies, or a multi car policy.
I wouldn't tell them she no longer has access to another car if you are intending to replace it shortly.1 -

Are you saying that because her car was written off, that she can no longer have a policy against it
OR
she was actually not insured on her old written off car or for some reason they are refusing the claim ?
Dont forget to also inform your insurance co that a named driver has had an “incident”0 -
Thanks.
I'm simply asking whether she's good to drive my car.
What I'm not asking is whether she's good to drive other cars.
I'll clarify then.LightFlare said:

What I'm saying is...
Her car was written off.
The insurance company wrote her a letter
That letter said her insurance was now suspended
And they followed that by saying her car that was written off is not insured (obviously I'd have thought)
And then they followed that by saying she's no longer covered for driving other cars.
Hope that helps clear things up.1 -
The insurance is only suspended because there is currently no vehicle to be covered. When she gets another car then the insurance will be re-instated.
There is normally a time limit on adding a new vehicle. If it's not done then the insurance is cancelled0 -
Yes, she’s good to drive your car because you have a policy with her as a named driver.1
-
They mean that her own policy no longer covers her to drive other cars (obviously, because it's suspended).B0bbyEwing said:And then they followed that by saying she's no longer covered for driving other cars.
They can't tell her whether she's insured to drive other cars full stop as they have no idea what other policies she might or might not have that would cover her. So they will only advise her about the policy that they sold her.
Obviously if she is a named driver on your policy then yes, she can drive your car under that policy.1
