Can anyone recommend any email provider that's independent of things like Google?
I don't want a Google account and just want an email account with user and password with a simple.interface.

....not unless you already have an existing BT email address (and a BT ID logon). BT stopped new email accounts in '22.

GMX would be a good alternative to Gmail, I've used it for years without any trouble. You can have a .co.uk or a .com address.

Same here. I have gradually migrated most of my Gmail contacts over to GMX.com. You can have up to ten extra aliases on the account if you want, including many regions such as .co.uk, .us .es, all running on the same account.

You can have web page access or use them with an email client such as Thunderbird.

I have used them for several years to avoid Gmail's prying eyes.

    Based in Germany.

Are you looking for privacy email provider? What's wrong with having google account? Could have a read here for background info: https://tuta.com/blog/best-private-email-service
Do you use IMAP or POP 3? Happy to use webmail or require an email client?
I don't think you can use Proton with email client without a "bridge " and you need paid account for that as far as I know.
