Hi,
Can anyone tell me what/if the women who work on the tills in these shops are called? Also for anyone who has recently worked as one is this the only role on your shift or are you expected to take turns in putting stock out. I’m sort of looking for a job where it’s sitting only as I have osteoarthritis in my feet. I do a job now with 12 hours on feet 3 times a week and it’s getting extremely painful.

Cashiers (and it's not just women, at least not in ours)2

Pretty much any normal employment contract will have a clause to the effect of "such other duties as the employer may reasonably require". So, if you are unable to do work that requires significant amounts of standing (for example) you need to discuss this with the potential employer in advance. Larger supermarkets etc may well be able to accommodate this better than small companies. It is not uncommon to see till operators / cashiers etc in wheelchairs or with obvious mobility restrictions.Sarah69 said:Hi,Can anyone tell me what/if the women who work on the tills in these shops are called? Sorry to hear of your situation. If you do manage to find a sedentary job, be mindful that you'll be using less energy so will probably need to eat less to avoid gaining weight (which I imagine would make the pain worse) and be getting less weight bearing exercise, so might need to find something to compensate for that. Shelf stacking/keeping the shelves tidy, removing/marking down old stock, maybe even customer service desk depending on store size (not forgetting cigarette/tobacco sales which can require standing almost all of the time. (Tesco)0

There used to be a lady in our local supermarket who was a wheelchair user. Never saw her do anything but work behind a till, so her contract may have specified that she was restricted to these duties. Or she had a sympathetic manager, who ignored the 'other duties as required' part of a normal contract.0

I have just returned from our local Sainsburys a few minutes ago. Only popped in for a couple of things as its a horrible wet day and didnt want to do a full shop.
There were only 2 manned tills and as I was waiting a supervisor asked the young lad on the next till to 'Come off and go and collect trolleys on the car park'.
His reply was 'I did it last Sunday so I'm not doing it again today'. Surprisingly the supervisor shrugged her shoulders and told the lady putting my stuff through to close after me and do the trolleys!0 -
She would, almost certainly, have been disabled (for employment law purposes) so the supermarket would be legally required to make "reasonable adjustments". Those adjustments could easily include removing the requirement to do activities that required standing / mobility. It is not clear if the OP in this thread would meet the legal test for disability. They may well do but a medical report would almost certainly be required.Silvertabby said:There used to be a lady in our local supermarket who was a wheelchair user. To be fair many well known large employers actually go far further than the law would require to accommodate disabled staff.1 -
My local supermarket has a cashier on the tills who walks with a rollator.
My neighbours works in the supermarket stocking the shelves. She doesn’t do anything else.0 -
I really just need a sitting job so I thought tills would be perfect.mjm3346 said:Shelf stacking/keeping the shelves tidy, removing/marking down old stock, maybe even customer service desk depending on store size (not forgetting cigarette/tobacco sales which can require standing almost all of the time. In my local superstore some people seem to be exclusively cashiers, I never see them stacking shelves.Credit card 1800
