Hastings Direct You Drive

Morning
My son has bought his first car and has been driving it for 2 weeks. He has a Hastings Direct back tab box and the app.
His driving is perfect. All green all the way across the board. The phone use is on red and he has a driving total of 1 out of a 100!!!
He NEVER touches his phone while he's driving but he does have Google Maps running and Spotify (if a crap song comes on, he just rides it out!)
His app is also saying he's done 2 trips and he's done at least 10 getting to and from work.
I've spoken to HD and they've said the app is 100% accurate and he's lying. I've raised a complaint as he's now too scared to drive his car!
Side note, he's been on a drive with his stepdad and his stepdad used the phone to check the map as they were travelling. This never appeared on the trip record.
How the hell can HD say it's accurate!
Has anyone else had problems with this app?

I have no faith in these apps.

I remember using the Cuvva app which said my driving was 93%. They claimed it was able to tell who was driving using “patented technology” or similar.

After taking a National Express coach from Glasgow to London it commended me on my driving by increasing my score to 97% 😉

On the return journey I was using my phone and it flagged up about the dangerous mobile use whilst driving, although the coach driver at the time seemed completely unaffected… 😅

You might consider buying a cheap dash camera and mount it on the back window pointing at the phone. Then you would have evidence to show that your son hasn't touched his phone while driving.

Hastings are under a duty of care to ensure their technology is reasonably accurate. It doesn't sound like it is.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

    Good morning,

I installed the tab and app for the first time in late August, upon renewal of my car insurance (saved over £200).

From my experience, it has taken at least a month to get a meaningful score. Some short trips are not recorded due to data inconsistences. Recently done a 550 mile round trip and the data was more accurate than my google timeline. Google maps running the whole journey.

Other people's mobile usage during trips will not be recorded - the insured's mobile app connects, once securely paired via bluetooth, to the tab on the window.

Presumably he has set up the app correctly, eg so use of location services is "always" rather than whilst the app is in use and precise location is turned on? Similarly he doesnt turn bluetooth off etc?

Does this mean that Hastings needs your precise location even when not driving the car or does the "tab" act as some kind of on/off switch? Is the app always on?

Isn't this kind of "telematics" system going to rely on the quality of the components in the phone rather than those in a proper "black box"? Isn't a £50 mobile likely to be less accurate than a new iPhone?

I'm thinking of taking a drive with him and recording it with my phone

His stepdad was using my son's phone so it should have registered as phone use.

I helped him set it up. Ticked all the right bits.
