Will installing a smart meter affect my existing solar panel system and FIT payments?

I’m anticipating having a Smart Meter installed for use with my Octopus electricity and gas account. However, I have existing solar panels (installed in 2011) and a FIT payment contract with E-On Next and I am concerned whether this will be a problem when the Smart Meter is installed.

Shortly, I also intend to have an EV electrical charger installed to charge a newly purchased electric vehicle and I wish to take advantage of Octopus flexible/cheap tariffs.

My questions are therefore:
  1. Can I have a Smart Meter installed without complications?
  2. How will the Smart Meter work with my FIT account?
  3. Will I be able to keep the FIT contract with E-On Next?
  4. In order to take “FIT generation” meter readings, will I continue to use the existing Total Generation Meter and will this continue to work alongside the Smart Meter?

    1. Yes.
    2. No direct effect. You will however get the option of switching from deemed export to metered export.
    3. Yes.
    4. Yes, continue to use your current Generation meter.
I have a FIT with EON Next and had a smart meter installed by EDF 3-4 years ago. I let EON know but nothing else changed.
My supply is now with Octopus on Intelligent Octopus Go, and we have an Ohme EV charger.

  • Many thanks for this - really helpful. I'm thinking of the Ohme EV charger.
