Downloading music

Please help a nerd! I have a Sony Walkman MP3 player and I want to start downloading music. I want to do this legally (of course) and I wonder if you could help me find the best and cheapest sites to do this from? I don't want to have to do any formatting (or whatever it is called)

I have an Ipod, but I also have a sony ericsson walkman phone and for both of these I use itunes. Just download it for free from the apple website.
