What fragrant climbers???
Today we've decluttered 2 failing wooden arches in the garden. Woodworking chap has installed 2 new ones, made to order and nicely painted a pale green. Just need to get stuff growing up them now. (well, not now, likely in the spring I guess)
OH tutted repeatedly every time I talked about doing this. And now that it's done he's asking what should we plant by them. He's insisting on something fragrant. Who am I to argue!!!?!
But what? And when??
I'm wondering about honeysuckle and jasmine. I'm happy to have different things climbing up either side of each arch (so 4 different things rather than just 2).
We did have honeysuckle on one and "hairy old man" clematis on the other but both died a year or so back - I think it was old age as both had vines an inch across.
In addition to smell I'd like colour. After the clematis died I had planted 2 more which have been drastically cut back to make the replacement arches easier to install. They were very disappointing - good growth in just 18 months but the flowers were tiddly - 1/4 inch? across so not really putting on the show I was hoping for. That's what I get for buying from Lidl I guess.
I still have seeds from the hairy old man clematis so might try getting those started in the spring. No fragrance but it was a fun plant. And if I don't put it on these arches there are plenty of other places some of this could go.
So suggestions on a postcard please!!!

Its going to be dependant on what part of the country you live in, some are hardier than others, some evergreen too, but clematis montana Rubens has a lovely vanilla scent. Not the most spectacular flowers but they produce masses of pale pink ones and grew thickly. Mine used to flower twice spring and late summer. The 2nd crop always had a slightly deeper pink. It covered our pergola easily and a slight breeze was enough spread the scent. Bees etc loved it too.Honesuckle tends to grow better in one direction, ours naturally puts out a lot more long growth on the west side, we actually had to wind some stems through the trellis to make it go where we wanted it, and it still grows out the other way. That might be a consideration for which side you plant it on. A local well established nursery should be able to advise.1

Sorry - meant to say.....cement like soil (I'm adding to it as much as possible), garden faces to the south east, Bournemouth about 5 miles from the sea. So winters can get cold but almost never snowy.

I'd go for a Star Jasmine. I have a white one which is very vigorous and a pink one which is a bit slower growing and tamer (and flowers slightly earlier). The other option is of course some roses.0

I would recommend Winter Jasmin (Jasminum nudiflorum) - evergreen and beautiful yellow flowers (if you're not a yellowist) and will combine with clematis.
I've found it easy to propagate, so easy infact I've had to give many seedlings and juveniles away.

Think if you want dense, lots of growth or a lighter touch.
And how visible from the house and do you walk under them much.
I'd not go for honeysuckle unless you buy one of the shower garden centre ones as they tend to get straggly quite soon.
I've got a lovely rose over an arch that blooms all year and mostly evergreen, good fragrance and I'll add the name tomorrow when I'm more awake 🙂
I also have a musk climber that's not so vigorous but the fragrance is heavenly. That's Celeste.
I've grown it at 2 houses.
The net is geared to selling rather than what you search for so I can't do links. Will look at my rose book for details tomorrow.
What I did notice is if you put musk rose into a search it comes up with all shapes and colours. They are good dooers.
Buy good ones bare rooted now for cheaper prices and plant November with a little bonemeal to get the roots going.
Plant plants in winter when the roots will grow and get established to support the new growth in summer.
Sink a water bottle with it's bottom cut off to water down under if we get more drought.
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
