    i would expect retailer to ask. But YES, they should they go back. As retailer could use that as a reason to reject the chargeback.

    Just as a final comment - my son has had it confirmed that the chargeback was successful and the bank have closed the case. He has a full refund and we will contact the company to arrange return of the shoes.

    Re finality, perhaps just worth reiterating the point made earlier that it's not necessarily the end of the story as far as the merchant is concerned, even if it is for the bank:

    Indeed.

    As I am sure I also pointed out much earlier in this thread, a chargeback makes no judgement about the rights and wrongs of the dispute between the customer and the retailer. In theory they have six years in which to decide whether to pursue what they feel you owe through the courts.
