Morning all, thanks for today's start @Gers. It's a cloudy start here this morning although sunshine is apparently on its way, no rain expected and just a light breeze. Top temps of 15 deg but feeling more like 13 deg. I'd forgotten it was recycling bin collection today so had a quick dash early doors to dispose of mine before they arrived - going straight from a warm bed to a chilly outdoors is not to be recommended!
Hard to believe, but it's been a full 12 months since I had cataract surgery and, as I expected, yesterday's eye test showed my glasses need a change of lenses now that my eyes have fully healed and settled. Being in receipt of Pension Credit I had wondered if I could get a voucher towards the cost but, alas no, because I'm on the savings element not the guaranteed one. Never mind, it's been budgeted for. The new pair should be ready for collection within the next few days. After that, I had a browse round the hospice CS and bought two jigsaw puzzles for £1.99 each. I'll not do them just yet, they're for my winter pastimes when I'll not be venturing far.
Today I'll hang the new door curtain while a hand-knits wash is on the go and maybe have a walk out for a TV guide depending on what else needs doing. Tonight's dinner is the last couple of fish fingers from the freezer with some oven chips and side salad.
@Ruby - Fingers crossed your meetings today go well.
@TA - Good to hear the medication change for your DF's husband is making life a bit easier for her and I hope your lunch meet-up today goes ahead.
@mehefin - Hope you're feeling a little better now after the food poisoning. Good news about the Co-op Community Award, just a shame it can't be made this year rather than next.
@Izzy - Prepping for our eventual demise is never easy but I'm so pleased to hear your plans are now underway. We may think we've got all the time in the world but all too often that's not the case so it's best done sooner rather than later.
Have a good day all, take care and help yourself to a virtual hug if you need or want one. XBe kind to others and to yourself too.8 -
IzzyBee said:Well I have got a bit of a funny day today I recorded a programme about what you need to do to prepare for when you die I know it sounds morbid but it wasn’t and every year we say the same we must get our funerals sorted we must make a will and we never do so we have taken the bull by the horns and sat yesterday and discussed what we both wanted and what we want in our wills so tomorrow afternoon we are going to pay for two funerals and next Thursday afternoon we are going to see about our wills and POA we told all the family last night of course they were all inviting us for meals so they could poison us and get there hands on our money they are in for a shock there will be nothing left after we have paid for this lot but we have put it off to long .You are doing not only the right thing but a great thing - making sure that your wishes are known and giving your family and yourself peace of mind. I am evangelical about people sorting out Wills and (especially) POA well before anything unexpected happens. I have done all of the above plus what's known as a Living Will explaining very clearly when I do not want medical intervention. Both my POAs are well aware of my wishes and the LW is lodged with my GP too.Congratulations Izzy!

Afternoon all...Had a nice time in Germany, ate a lot of german food and a lot of Greek/Turkish food weirdly...saw a lot of touristy stuff that the friend we were visiting hadn't done either so that was nice. the pumber is now here so I'll finally have hot water to wash dishes with by the weekend...Haven#t been to the allotment yet and it's not looking like I'll be able to until next week, so I'm itching to do that obviously. Got covid and flu jab on Friday and maybe Wales at the weekend for my sisters birthday , or she's coming up at the end of October for a quiz so I'll maybe see about leaving it until then, we'll see. I was up at stupid o clock this morning though, cleaning stuff, moving stuff, getting things out of his way so there's a definite nap in my future.Izzy, well done you, me and the OH have already discussed this, we wrote wills about six years ago, we do need to update them but they'd be broadly the same anyway. YorksLass, why don't you have a look at glasses driect or some online company? Guaranteed a lot cheaper and you can either digitally see what the frames would look like or get some sent out to try on. I can't think your prescription would be beyond their offerings. Allie, glad you had a nice time away! Gers, good to hear you are mending and have also been gallivanting anyway
Ruby, hope you get a new person soon. Rob is still on my mind but if he does have a proper advocate, then it should be better ayway [ apart form roaming the streets that is!] Rosy, also glad you are on the mend! Coxy, sounds like a good job, I'm sure you'll have some pretties next year..I have forgotten lots of stuff so sorry! See you all tomorrow probably!

Hello everyone
I've just had a read back over the last couple of days. I managed to get antibiotics and steroids from the nurse practitioner on Monday but couldn't collect them until Tuesday morning. I'd had a really upset stomach since the weekend and read it was a symptom of the new Covid strain, so thought I'd buy a test while I was in Boots.
So yes, I've got Covid...still feeling awful so I've said I'll not be at work this week. To be honest I'm more worried that it might make Long Covid worse than actually having it again, but I'll just have to wait and see. I spoke to a doctor after I'd done the test and she said to still take the antibiotics and steroids as they have evidence now that they can help...and I think they are, so that's good.
Little one phoned last night 'Just to cheer you up Granny'....she said 'so you've got Long Covid and new Covid that's a bit much.' She was full of excitement as she's going on a school trip to somewhere called Seven Stories at Newcastle tomorrow...however her sugars were really low through the night and DD had to put her on her feeding pump. She went to school on it this morning and then DD was picking her up at lunchtime as she couldn't go to swimming. They are going to spend the afternoon with a friend and her little girl, who also has a feeding tube and monitor. DD said if necessary she'll just take her to Newcastle in the car tomorrow so she doesn't miss the trip completely.
If anyone does want to have Covid tests just in case, it cost £2.49 for one from Boots and then £4.99 for 5 from Amazon! I need to know when I'm negative for mam and dad and little one.
Nice to see you back Taff...I've had lovely Turkish food in Germany too
Redruby - you reminded me that my youngest DD used to love it when our lady chimney sweep used to come when she was little, she used to send her outside to look for the brush coming out the top of the chimney, or maybes she was just getting her out of her way! DD said for years that she wanted to be a chimney sweep when she grew up
Hope everyone is having a good day x

I forgot to ask earlier...can someone give me an easy recipe for leek and potato soup? I have a huge leek I got with my shopping at the weekend, plenty potatoes but no cream, I have milk if that would work? I have a fancy for soup but all I have in the cupboard is tomato, which is little ones' favourite, but not mine!
Thanks to everyone who will no doubt be on here earlier than me tomorrow x5 -
I slice the leeks thinly and add some onions. Put in a large saucepan with a generous amount of butter and leave to sweat, with the lid on, for at least 15 mins on a low heat.
Then peel and chop your potatoes and add to the pot, along with some vegetable stock and let it all simmer for an hour or two.
You can then choose to liquidise some of it, either with a hand held blender or in a machine, or just mash it with a potato masher.
Sorry not to be more precise but my soup making is like that!5
