Will I be eligible to pay council tax at a single person's rate?

Hello,

Can you advise on if I will qualify to pay council tax at a single person's rate?

My ex wife will be leaving the family home at the end of the month. Our two Sons will be staying with me. There ages are 19 and 16 years. My elder Son is in full-time education at university and living at home. He also works part-time. My younger son is in his final year of his GCSEs.

Based on the information I have shared, will I be eligible to pay council tax at a single person's rate?

Thanks in advance.

Yes you will with one child under 18 and the other at University, you will have to inform and possibly provide evidence that your older son is a student, the part time work doesn't matter.

Ask your eldest son to get a certificate from his university to confirm his student status.
All universities provide the certificate, so will not be a problem.
Submit the certificate to your local authority, saves alot of time.

Level of discount is 25%. In your case it won't be the single person's discount but one known as a one -regard discount. In simple terms only you are counted or regarded as resident as your son will be disregarded as a f/t student. From the date your ex leaves then there are 2 people resident. A resident is someone over 18 who has their sole or main.residence at the property. Your 19 year old is "disregarded" because he is a full time student. As per post above his university will provide confirmation.of this and the period of his course.

From date his course ends then there would be two people resident so the discount will end and full ct will become due again

Your younger son doesn't matter until he turns 18- if he is or has been studying again he can be disregarded for a period so there may be some overlap with eldest one's uni course

You will only have to pay full 100% council tax from the date that 2  of you are regarded, or counted.
