Halfords Shares

Hi
My husband worked for Halfords for 10 years and was part of their shareholder scheme. I'm not sure of the dates but would have been the 90's. He has no paperwork as his ex partner destroyed it all when they split up. I have been on to him for years to make enquiries but without a rocket up his rear end he has done nothing. I suppose what I want to know is where does he start to find out what shares he has with the company. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'd suggest contacting Halfords first, they may still have relevant records, although it could be a long shot after so many years. There are a couple of options on their corporate website that may get to the right person:

PS this may be better (shareholder FAQs, including how to contact their registrars) https://www.halfordscompany.com/investors/faqs/

So this was a ShareSave Scheme? Is he sure he didnt cash them in when the scheme matured? Most people did in my experience.

You need to contact the registrar for the company who'll hold the details of all the shareholders. In the link provided above there is an email address which is probably easier than their 0871 number!

Hmmm, the thing is the Halfords Group plc that's listed on the LSE today isn't quite the same as the Halfords that existed in the 90s as it was owned by Boots and bought by CVC in 2002.

Assuming they weren't sold, did he actually own shares in Boots Group plc? Boots became Alliance Boots when it merged with Alliance Unichem in 2006 and was then bought in 2007 by KKR and taken private. I imagine that would have been all cash and at the latest he should have been paid out then. You could try to figure out which registrar Alliance Boots used and ask it but it was so long ago - 18 years - any money waiting for your husband may have been forfeited.

There were no Halfords shares in the 90s so most likely Boots shares then even if they were kept there was a buyout  so everyone should have received a cash payment.
Cheques were sent out early July 2007. The old certificates did not need returning - I still have mine

Yeah, the usual outcome with these things is that people received their money when it was due but a couple of decades later and because their record keeping is so poor they forget and chase it again.
